In 1943, several librarians were secretly recruited by the OSS to rescue books scattered throughout Europe.
As men and women who normally only took care of books turned into intelligence agents. Library activities such as acquisition, cataloging, and reproduction became fraught with mystery, uncertainty, and even danger.
