Semarang, 10 September 2025 – Al-Azhar Junior High School welcomed special guests from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as part of a community service activity. This activity is part of the WCU SDGs Community Service programme of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at Diponegoro University (UNDIP), which aims to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through cross-cultural education and learning. The programme involves the Library and Information Science Study Programme of FIB UNDIP, which collaborates with PhD students from the Faculty of Science and Technology UKM to build academic and social networks between countries.

The event took place in classes 9C and 9D at Al-Azhar Junior High School, with students from those classes as the main participants. The atmosphere was lively from the start of the welcome, when UKM representatives introduced themselves and conveyed the purpose of their visit, which was to share knowledge and foster cross-border friendship. The guests from UKM, who were talented PhD students in the fields of science and technology, brought with them interesting experiences of Malaysian culture.

Photo of the exciting mini games

One of the interesting activities in this event was a mini game in the form of a Malaysian-themed crossword puzzle. Through this game, students were invited to test their knowledge about the culture, history, and characteristics of the neighbouring country, such as its special foods, traditional customs, and national anthem. The students’ enthusiasm was evident in their eagerness to answer each question and work together with their groups, creating an interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere. This activity not only increased the students’ understanding of Malaysia, but also honed their collaboration and critical thinking skills.

Commemorative photo with the students

In addition, a light discussion session was held to share experiences between Al-Azhar Junior High School students and UKM students. The event concluded with a warm group photo session, marking the success of this activity as a moment of friendship and cross-cultural learning. The principal of Al-Azhar Junior High School stated that this activity broadened the students’ horizons about the outside world and strengthened the values of international tolerance. With collaborations like this, it is hoped that similar programmes can continue to support the SDGs, particularly in quality education and global partnerships.
